Meet Dr Ivy Branin, ND: Naturopathic Doctor in NYC

Dr Ivy Branin is a Naturopathic Doctor in NYC who received her degree in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University.  She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biochemical engineering and a minor in French from Rutgers University.  After graduating from Rutgers, she worked for 3 years as a process validation engineer in the pharmaceutical industry in New York and Connecticut.

She found the work as an engineer challenging but she wanted to find a career which would allow her to help others in a more meaningful way. After attending a holistic fasting retreat in Thailand, she became more interested in natural medicine. Then while working in Connecticut, she was introduced to naturopathic medicine through a neighbor and felt that it was her life calling.

As a naturopathic doctor in NYC, Dr Branin does not approach disease with a “one-size fits all” perspective but rather sees each patient as an individual with their own potential for optimal health.  She supports people in their desire to feel good and good about themselves using the naturopathic principles of dietary and lifestyle management, homeopathy, visceral manipulation, botanical medicine, and craniosacral therapy.

Dr Branin practices as a Naturopathic Doctor in the charming West Village in New York City, NY and holds a naturopathic license in the state of Vermont.  She is also a member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians (NYANP) and Pediatric Association of Naturopathic Physicians (PedANP).  She meets regularly with other NYC naturopaths at the monthly gathering of Brooklyn Docs.  She is also on the board of the Association of Perinatal Naturopathic Doctors (APND).

When not seeing Naturopathic patients in her NYC office or virtually, Dr Branin follows her other passions of dancing, yoga, travel, speaking French, kombucha brewing and cooking.  She is an active member of her Jewish and meditation communities and the French Institute Alliance Française, and teaches yoga for homeless and at risk youth with Street Yoga.  She is also the host of weekly French conversation group next to her New York City office.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from my NYC Naturopathic Doctor?

We listen to you and explore the deeper cause of your symptoms. We go beyond treating only the presenting symptoms, and look to resolve the root cause of your illness.

Is Naturopathic Telemedicine Effective?

Yes! Even before the pandemic Dr Ivy has offered virtual appointments to patients for various reasons including international and out-of-state patients, patients with small children, patients with mobility or transportation issues and patients preferring the convenience of having their appointments from their home or office.  These patients have been able to achieve the same results as Dr Ivy’s in-office patients as Dr Ivy uses:
• A HIPAA compliant electronic medical records system called CHARM
◦ Patients can upload past diagnostic and blood work as well as recommend additional testing including the DUTCH test for review.
◦ Uses a private and secure version of Zoom
• An online Dispensary for patients to easily order physician grade herbs and nutrients that are quickly delivered to the patient.

Is naturopathic medicine cost-effective?

Absolutely! Because we focus on treating the cause of your symptoms. While working to identify the root cause of your condition, each treatment is aimed at improving overall health - and in doing so we prevent illness. This will save you money in the long run.

What types of patients can naturopathic medicine treat?

Everyone can benefit. Naturopathic medicine can benefit women, men, children of all ages in NYC and beyond - from people who would just like to feel better to the terminally ill.

What does the first naturopathic visit typically look like?

Depending on your needs, the initial visit either at our NYC office or virtually may take up to 60 minutes and includes addressing your primary concerns. We want to understand the strength and challenges that lie ahead in your journey to health and how we can serve you as a unique individual.

I don't live in New York or New Jersey, can naturopath Dr Ivy still help me?

Yes. If you're not in NYC, Naturopath Dr Branin offers both phone and video appointments allowing her to help patients from all over the United States and over seas. Although some of her patients do travel over 2 hours for their appointments.

If I am taking prescription medications, can I use naturopathic medicine?

Yes, but it depends upon your circumstances. Dr. Ivy has been trained extensively in interactions of pharmaceutical medications and herbal medicine. This includes any potential adverse effects that could arise from improperly combined drug-nutrient and drug-herbal interactions. It is extremely important that you bring a list of ALL current medications and supplements to each visit and keep us informed of any changes, including dosage.

Yes. Naturopaths will work in consultation with any health care provider. We believe that each profession provides something valuable in creating the best possible care for your needs. If you have an additional health care practitioner, please bring their contact information and any recent lab work.

In what ways are naturopathic and conventional doctors alike?

Naturopathic doctors' training consists of a four year, graduate level, accredited naturopathic medical school after the completion of a four year undergraduate degree. The first two years of schooling are like those of a conventional physician (MD, DO), the majority of time spent on basic sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology, etc.). The additional two years also consist of specialized academic courses (cardiology, gynecology, gastroenterology, urology, neurology, etc.). It is in these last two years, that naturopathic students train along side other naturopaths seeing patients at school supported clinics. Both study modern physical, clinical and laboratory diagnosis and are trained to diagnose and treat disease. And finally, both are required to pass a similar board examination to become licensed.

How is naturopathic medicine different from conventional medicine?

Naturopathic medicine approaches each condition in a different manner. We focus less on the disease and more on the person. We look to explore why symptoms are present rather than matching a treatment to a symptom in order to suppress that symptom. Each person is unique and has a different reason why they have a condition. Therefore, Naturopathic physicians respect that each person needs treatment that is unique to them. We work with our patients to support their own self healing mechanisms to restore balance. In support of this approach to healing, Naturopathic physicians receive additional training in herbal medicine, homeopathy, body work, spinal manipulation, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, clinical nutrition, counseling, and intravenous therapies.

How long will it take for me to see results?

What kind of testing do naturopaths do?

Our team of naturopathic doctors believe that testing is a vital part of determining the root cause. Some of our patients come in with a set of past blood and diagnostic work, which we review at the initial appointment. In fact we encourage all new patients to bring copies of their past lab work as it generally helps to make the most of this initial appointment. At the end of the initial appointment, we determine which additional testing is necessary and help patients navigate the best testing options especially if finances are of concern. This may include standard blood tests to assess thyroid function, metabolic health, nutritional levels and hormones. These tests maybe ordered through the patient’s choice medical provider to be billed through insurance or through our partnership lab Vibrant Wellness. In certain cases, we will also order alternative testing through Vibrant Wellness such as heavy metals and other environmental toxins, saliva hormones and cortisol, mold, food allergy panel, neurotransmitters and comprehensive stool analysis. Our naturopathic doctors may also recommend ordering the DUTCH Test with our most frequently ordered being the DUTCH Complete.

What products do naturopaths use?

It has been the experience of our naturopathic doctors that professional grade high quality nutritional supplements and herbal products are a crucial part of a comprehensive wellness plan. Though we have no leaning towards any particular brand, we only prescribe vitamins, minerals, amino acids, omegas and herbs from professional-grade brands that carry cGMP certifications, can provide certificates of analysis, have quality assurance policies and preform finished product testing. Some of these supplements and herbs may seem more expensive than those found at the drug store or warehouse club, but trust us cheap supplements are never a good investment!
We are often asked about how we take into account certain dietary restrictions such as vegan, kosher or food allergies/sensitivities. In these cases, we make sure to prescribe only supplements that are certified to meet these restrictions. Similarly we understand that some patients are more sensitive than others so we make sure to take a very slow gentle approach to dosing and supplement selection.
In order to make access to the products we recommend for our patients safe and easy, we use FullScript which ships directly to our patients high quality supplements that they depend on. For convenience FullScript offers auto refills, a mobile app and free shipping for all orders over $50. Monthly supplement costs vary greatly depending on protocol as well as duration of protocol. It is our intention that most herbs and supplements should be a temporary vehicle to restored wellness not a never ending sentence of swallowing 10 plus capsules a day.
