As an expert in Women’s Health and Hormones, two viruses that I see a lot in my practice are the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Many women come to me frustrated because their HPV isn't clearing, and often, a chronic or reactivated EBV infection is the hidden culprit.
What is Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)?
The Epstein-Barr virus is a type of herpes virus, sometimes called Human Herpesvirus 4. It's the virus we commonly associate with mononucleosis, which you might remember from high school as "the kissing disease."
It's transmitted through saliva and other bodily fluids, and it's incredibly common. About 50% of children will have been exposed by age five, and up to 95% of adults will have had it in their lifetime. While many people clear the initial infection without long-term issues, the virus can lie dormant and reactivate later, causing a whole new set of problems.
How EBV Makes It Harder to Get Rid of HPV
The main point I want to drive home is that if you have EBV, it is going to be harder to get rid of HPV. There are a couple of key reasons for this.
It Suppresses Your Immune System: To clear HPV, you need a robust, active immune system. EBV has a negative impact on our immune function, essentially weakening the very system your body relies on to fight off HPV.
It Increases HPV Persistence: By suppressing the immune system, EBV allows HPV to stick around for a much longer time. This is a major concern because the longer HPV persists in the body, the more likely you are to develop cervical cell changes (cervical dysplasia) that could potentially lead to cancer.
EBV and Increased Cancer Risk
The connection between these two viruses goes even deeper and has serious implications for your health. EBV doesn't just help HPV stick around longer; it actively increases what we call oncogenic potential, which is the risk of developing cancer.
It does this in two ways:
It impairs the immune system's ability to target and destroy cancerous or pre-cancerous cells.
It can actually promote the HPV genome to integrate directly into your own host DNA. This is a crucial step in the development of HPV-related cancers.
Symptoms and Warning Signs of EBV & HPV
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Symptoms
Since EBV is associated with mononucleosis, the acute symptoms are often memorable:
Fever and chills
Severe fatigue
Sore throat
Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck
Enlarged spleen or liver
Headaches and muscle aches
Painful joints
The key thing to remember is that EBV can become reactivated years after the initial infection. Reactivated EBV is a primary cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It can also negatively affect thyroid function, and since your thyroid is crucial for immune regulation, this is yet another way it can make the progression of HPV worse.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Symptoms
Typically, high-risk HPV has no symptoms. The most common sign is an abnormal Pap test result that shows you've tested positive for one or more strains. The only exceptions are low-risk strains that cause genital warts or, in very advanced cases of cervical dysplasia or cancer, where other symptoms might develop.
Conventional Treatments
For HPV
From a preventative standpoint, there's vaccination. However, the vaccine doesn't cover all strains of HPV, and I've seen vaccinated women in my practice test positive for high-risk strains. For active cellular changes (CIN 1, 2, or 3), the main options are surgical procedures like a LEEP or cone biopsy. While these remove the abnormal cells, they do nothing to eliminate the underlying virus from your body.
For EBV
There is no conventional antiviral medication for EBV. The typical recommendation is rest, fluids, and palliative care to manage symptoms like headaches and fatigue.
Natural Remedies and Immune Support
This is where a naturopathic approach can make a world of difference. We focus on supporting the body's own ability to fight and clear these viruses.
For HPV, my protocol often includes:
Diet: An anti-inflammatory diet that eliminates excess sugar, refined carbohydrates, and alcohol, all of which suppress immune function.
Suppositories: A rotation of suppositories containing Thuja, Vitamin A, and blends of antiviral and immune-supportive herbs.
Supplements: Key nutrients like Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Zinc, and Selenium.
Methylated Folate: Low folate levels are linked to difficulty clearing HPV, so high-dose methylated folate is crucial.
Mushrooms & Herbs: Powerful antivirals and immune-modulators like Turkey Tail mushroom, AHCC, Lomatium, Echinacea, Licorice, and Baptisia.
For EBV, we focus on adrenal and immune support with:
B Complex & Zinc: Foundational nutrients for energy and immunity.
Adrenal Herbs: Patient-specific adaptogens like Licorice, Ashwagandha, or Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus) to combat fatigue and support stress response.
Beta-Carotene: High doses are very effective.
Monolaurin: This is a crucial supplement for clearing EBV.

Where Do We Start?
When a patient has both active HPV and signs of reactivated EBV, the approach has to be strategic. Often, I will start with an EBV protocol alongside HPV suppositories. As we begin to manage the EBV and support the immune system, we can then transition to a more HPV-specific protocol. Every plan is tailored to the individual patient and their specific needs.
A Strategic Plan for Clearing HPV and EBV
While our Fullscript dispensary is a powerful tool for sourcing high-quality supplements, the most effective path to clearing persistent viruses like HPV and EBV comes from a plan tailored specifically to your body's needs.
Navigating the complexities of which virus to address first, the correct dosages, and the right combination of herbs can be overwhelming. A one-size-fits-all approach is rarely effective. A consultation with a naturopathic doctor is a crucial step to ensure you are on a safe and strategic path to restoring your immune health.
At Simplicity Health Associates, both myself, Dr. Ivy Branin, and Dr. Pauline Hoang are dedicated to providing this personalized care. We will work with you to understand your unique health picture—including any signs of reactivated EBV—and build a targeted supplement and lifestyle regimen. Our goal is to give your body the precise support it needs to overcome these viruses, giving you clarity and peace of mind.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main connection between EBV and HPV?
The primary connection is your immune system. Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) can suppress and weaken your immune system. Since a strong immune response is necessary to fight off and clear the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), an underlying EBV infection can allow HPV to persist in your body for much longer, increasing the risk of developing abnormal cervical cells.
I feel fine. Could I still have a reactivated EBV infection?
Yes. Reactivated EBV doesn't always present with dramatic symptoms like mononucleosis. It can manifest as more subtle, chronic issues like persistent fatigue, brain fog, or impaired thyroid function. These underlying issues can be enough to compromise your immune system's ability to deal with other viruses like HPV.
Will a LEEP procedure or cone biopsy get rid of the HPV virus?
No. While surgical procedures like LEEP are effective at removing the abnormal cells (cervical dysplasia) caused by HPV, they do not eliminate the underlying virus from your body. A naturopathic approach aims to support your system to clear the virus itself, reducing the risk of recurrence.
What are the most important natural supplements for clearing these viruses?
While every protocol is personalized, some key supplements for HPV include Methylated Folate, AHCC, and Turkey Tail mushroom as crucial essentials for immune support and antiviral activity. For EBV, some essential supplements include Monolaurin, Zinc, and adrenal-supportive herbs (like Ashwagandha) to combat the virus and manage fatigue.
How long does a natural treatment protocol usually take?
Clearing persistent viruses requires patience and consistency. A comprehensive naturopathic protocol for HPV, especially when EBV is also a factor, typically lasts for about six months. However, this timeline is highly individual and depends on your specific health picture.
